Karen B. Hawes County ManagerBiography: Karen B. Hawes began working for Lee County in 1985, serving for 16 years as Human Services Director and as County Manager since May 2009. She also was Deputy County Administrator in the early 1990s.

Ms. Hawes’ tenure in Human Services resulted in many award-winning initiatives for Best Practices, including the county’s “Neighborhood Building” and “Lee Education and Employment” programs, and the Triage Center. As County Manager, she spearheaded a 12-month strategic planning process that has led to reduced budgets and increased service efficiencies through measurable goals focused on community, transparency and accountability.

Ms. Hawes is active in both the National and Florida Association of Counties, and has served on the Community Health Visioning 2017 Steering Committee and Medicaid Task Force. She has a master’s degree in Health Services Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration.

Services Provided:
The County Manager is appointed by and reports to the Lee County Commissioners. The Manager implements the policies and programs of the Board and provides general management of county government.
